#AuthorInterview: Neharika Gupta

Hello Neharika, thank you so much for taking the time out to talk to BUZZ Magazine. ☺

First things first: how did you take up writing?

I was born this way! In all seriousness, I think in class III or IV I was asked to write something for my school magazine, a short article on dussehra. My grandmother would tell me religious stories when I was a kid, and I guess I was the most knowledgeable about this in class at that age. I was also one of the youngest students to be published in the school magazine.

What was your very first attempt at creative writing?

I wrote a story for a school competition about a girl who went to a new planet and made friends with an alien. When she returned, she thought it was a dream, but it really wasn’t. I didn’t expect this story to win, but I got second prize, I even made a little drawing with the story.

Where did you get the ideas for your stories?

I feel when you mash up random things like a cushion and a dog and maybe add magic, a story automatically comes across. Kind of like design thinking.

What in particular gave you the idea for Adulting?

It must have been all the weight taunting over the years! But it has to do with prejudices faced with being a girl and also a creative person..

Do you have particular schedules or writing routines when it comes to your work?

I try and write first thing in the morning. I also drink lots of tea, decaf coffee and maybe one cup of real coffee in a day,

If Adulting got turned into a movie or a web series, who would you like to see star as leads?

I love this question! You’ve read the book, you tell me!

What are your future plans for writing? Can you give out a teaser or two for your readers?

Yes, I hope to have a novel out next year. Stay tuned!

Do you have any particular authors who inspire your work?

Not really, I read everything. But I’m sure i’m influenced by those I happen to be reading and the time of writing and also those that I deconstruct or analyse after reading.

What would your advice be to aspiring authors?

Take writing classes online and find a way to write where what you’re writing is fun. Break past that barrier of writing for writing’s sake and you do that by writing for writing’s sake but also, learning to have fun and this isn’t easy. And also, always always, read what you love. That is the fuel for your creativity. You already know how to write a story.

What would be an ideal gift for you?

A starbucks and amazon books gift card 😀

And finally, if there was a book you could turn into a movie, what would it be and why?

Night Circus

What’s next for you? And when will the next Neharika Gupta book be available in the market?

Hopefully 2021!

Thank you once again for talking to BUZZ Magazine. We wish you all the best with your current work and future works. ☺
